On March 31, 2011 we had author Renata Bowers of Somers do three sessions at Martin on her book Frieda B. Herself. I thought she was excellent, particularly good with the 4th and 5th graders as she explained how she developed her storyline, how she collaborated with her illustrator, incorporated suggestions from "test" audiences of elementary school kids and how and why she wrote the book. She used a PowerPoint of the book, but after reading a page would stop and talk about aspects of that page, totally engaging her audience. Almost all the teachers I spoke to after the event were very positive. She was very energized and kid-friendly, adapting the program to the appropriate age cohort and I highly recommend her -- especially since she doesn't charge to come and gives you all the materials you need to order books, publicize the event etc. You can contact her via her website www.friedab.com or heyrenata@friedab.com.
David Hyde Costello
Some years ago we had David Costello when he was the brand new author of Here They Come. He was excellent (and at that time free). You might want to check it out at http://www.davidhydecostello.com/
Ron Roy
Ron Roy was our author last year. He lives in West Hartford and we were able to negotiate a deal cheaper than his usual author visit fee. The kids enjoyed him very much.
